I have a necklace that my partner gave me early on in our relationship. Probably the first year, maybe second. We have been together seventeen years now. It was probably a $20 gift at the time. It was a molecule necklace in the shape of dopamine.
It is probably my all time favorite gift from him. It sums him up perfectly. A nerdy guy who wanted me to know that being with me made him feel so good, so happy. A literal symbolic gift.
I wore it everyday for years until the coating started to wear off of it. Now I keep it safe in my jewelry box. Every time I see it or think about it, I remember how much he cared. How important I was to him. After seventeen years, it is hard to feel that way regularly with your partner. But that was the gift that helped him explain to me that he chose me. That I was the one that made him happy.
The one thing that when he saw it, he thought of me.
