Technically, it was probably Pacman or Ms. Pacman at an arcade. I would have been quite small at the time and that would have probably been simple enough for me to actually play.
Outside of an arcade, it would have to be a Super Nintendo game as that was the first console I ever had. The very first one, I believe was Super Mario World. I had the Super Mario Bros. All-Stars, Aladdin, and the first two Donkey Kong games, but I feel like I went for Super Mario World first.
To this day, I think it may still be my favorite Mario game of all time. I loved Mario 64. Sunshine was okay. I could not play Mario Galaxy without getting extremely physically ill, so my partner and I slogged through it together. I have Odyssey, but have not played it yet. Through All-Stars, I played the original Mario games too, but Super Mario World was such a better enhanced experience than those original games. Especially 2. 2 was weird. Though I did appreciate the characters had different abilities. And my brother and I loved playing the battle game in Mario Bros. 3.
Super Mario World introduced me to all the characters, all the level themes, and had so many secrets to find. There were all the different Koopa kids, the different Yoshis, and it all connected so well. When I think of Mario, that is what first pops into my head. It showed me how versatile video games could be.
(Side note: as an adult I got the original Zelda games for the SNES as well and played them. My first Zelda was Ocarina of Time and still my favorite.)
