Most annoying trope to me is the whole idea that the plot and conflict could be completely resolved with a single conversation. Not even a misunderstanding but simply asking a question or going out of their way to not clarify something. To me that is the weakest premise.
It is more interesting if they are unable to speak due to a communication failure like do not speak the same language or their phone dies. But most of these premises should be long standing things especially between romantic partners. Like one partner overhearing a conversation and worrying and then a bunch of hijinks ensue. It is just odd. Why would you not follow up or clarify or ask someone who may know more? Especially if it is the sole cause of the conflict. If it is part of a conflict that is easier to understand but when it is a simple thing that could be solved with one question, then why are we here? If you are not mature enough to ask this question or have a single conversation with a partner or friend, then you should not be in a relationship.
This trope is especially over used in sitcoms where the same thing happens over and over again and the characters learn nothing! That is even crazier. If my partner kept acting like that, I would be reevaluating that relationship and wondering if I want to keep it or not. I definitely would not like to struggle through the same communication issue forever. Sometimes I feel like these sitcom tropes are the reason people today have such terrible relationships. The things you read on reddit are usually all able to be solved if someone had only asked a question. Because they are comedies they also do not spend the time going into a backstory that could explain why someone has this communication issue. Like they had a problematic previous relationship, or parents that struggled with boundaries. If they would flesh out the problem more and give it more gravity, it really is not a terrible trope. However, most of the time it is used for laughs repeatedly with no chance of growth.
