I was a parentified child, a mini-adult. I never felt that growing up but I did a lot of things that most kids did not. I took care of my brother when my parents were at work. I worked at their business when they could not be there themselves because they were at their other jobs. I drove my dad around when he got his license taken away. I told my mom to divorce my dad on multiple occasions. I was the one that my mom used as a sounding board. I was aware of our financial situations. My parents did not think they would live to see me reach adulthood.
Yet I truly did not feel like an adult until the day that I called home to speak with my mom. Not because she wanted me to, told me to, or because I felt guilty. I called home because I wanted to try and have a good relationship with my parents. I forgave all the earlier hurt, abuse, and trauma to be there for them. Listening to their stories, seeing how they have changed and not changed. Being able to stand up for myself and coming to terms with the past.
Being able to uphold my boundaries and allow my parents to have what they needed from me at the same time was a huge moment of maturity for our relationship.
