When my youngest left home, I promised myself that I would not go rushing to the rescue the first time she had a meltdown. She has had a few and we have been helping her work through them. This last one is about her getting off all her meds against medical advice and we found her records and sent her the med list for her new doctor. My partner gave her a crisis number for our insurance group. She seems to be in a better place today.
She had begun the conversation demanding to come home because her life was falling apart. I fought every instinct of mine to wait and let her try to navigate this.
Online she is posting about missing all her friends from home and watching them all move on with their lives. The thing is even if she came home her friends would still be moving on to the next part of life. That is what happens after high school. No matter how much you try and explain these things to your kids they always seem surprised when they actually happen.
For now, she is safe. She has the resources she needs. I am stepping back and letting her try to do this herself. It is so hard because I want to swoop in and save her, but she needs to grow. Either she needs to learn to take on these responsibilities or she needs to admit she needs help. Sink or swim time.
