There are so many things out there about being a mother or having children. One area I have always struggled with is finding songs that work with being an adoptive mother. Adoption itself is a struggle for kids to find things that represent them. It is also hard for their parents. To find something that resonates deeply with the experience.

My daughter and I went and saw Six the Musical last year and it is an incredible show. I highly recommend it if you like catchy music and pro-women vibes. Leave the little ones at home though. Quite a few crass jokes about sex stuff. Things you are not going to want to explain later. My daughter was a junior in high school.

So most of the songs are about the women and their lives or their relationship with Henry the VIII. Jane Seymour’s “Heart of Stone” hits so hard to my adoptive mother heart. The rest of the show context disappears as my mind listens to her sing. I find myself humming it or singing it sometimes when I think about the struggle.

Your adoptive kids are going to test you. They are going to make this hard and will need you to prove to them time and again that you are there for them no matter what they have done. They will try to hurt you, physically, emotionally. They will try to prove that they do not deserve your love. They will lie, steal, and get into all kinds of trouble.

All you can do is weather the storm. Wait for it to subside. When you are still there after it is all over, that Is how they know you meant what you said to them. You can say or do all kinds of things. You can be perfect in every single way.

Nothing proves your love like still being there after everything. You have to be unbreakable, unshakeable, and stand the test of time.

“Heart of Stone” from Six: The Musical

You’ve got a good heart
But I know it changes
A restless tide, untamable

You came my way, and I knew a storm could come too
You’d lift me high, or let me fall

But I took your hand, promised I’d withstand
Any blaze you blew my way
‘Cause something inside, it solidified
And I knew I’d always stay

You can build me up, you can tear me down
You can try but I’m unbreakable
You can do your best, but I’ll stand the test
You’ll find that I’m unshakeable
When the fire’s burnt
When the wind has blown
When the water’s dried, you’ll still find stone
My heart of stone

You say we’re perfect
A perfect family
You hold us close, for the world to see

And when I say you’re the only one I’ve ever loved
I mean those words truthfully

But I know
Without my son your love could disappear
I know it isn’t fair, but I don’t care
‘Cause my love, will still be here

You can build me up, you can tear me down
You can try but I’m unbreakable
You can do your best, but I’ll stand the test
You’ll find that I’m unshakeable
When the fire’s burnt
The wind has blown
The water’s dried, you’ll still find stone
My heart of stone

Soon I’ll have to go
I’ll never see him grow
But I hope my son will know
He’ll never be alone
‘Cause like a river runs dry
And leaves it’s scars behind
I’ll be by your side
‘Cause my love
Is set in stone

Yeahhh
(You can build me up, you can tear me down)
(You can try but I’m)
Unbreakable
(You can do your best, but I’ll stand the test)
(You’ll find that I’m unshakeable)
The fire’s burnt
The wind has blown
The water’s dried, you’ll still find stone
My heart of stone

Can’t break me
Can’t break me
Stone
Can’t break me
Can’t break me
Stone
Can’t break me
You’ll still find stone
My heart of stone
