This has to be a trick question. Perhaps all the books that were planned to have sequels but publishers pulled out before release. I cannot think of one offhand, but I know I have been irked in the past to enjoy a book and then find out the sequel was never released due to poor sales of the first.

If it was not planned to be a series, then I am not sure a book needs a sequel. Most sequels are usually a money grab due to the popularity of the original. I also think some authors intend for some questions to be unanswered, letting your imagination fill any gaps that you have in a satisfactory way.

I have read many crime novel series and those can always have sequels because they have new cases and the story can continue. It is a good formula once if the author can figure out a good protagonist and supporting cast. Most notably, I enjoy Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta series.

I think a lot things that people push for sequels for are not usually worth an entire book. I wish we could all embrace novella or novelettes or even short story formats. That way if the author feels like answering a question they could without the need to fill another complete novel. Maybe something that is only world building.

I get irritated when my editor, or publisher demands a sequel. My created plot should end, as it stands, when I think it should.
