I used to hate the entire romance genre. I thought it was ridiculous and such a waste. Probably around the time I turned thirty, this began to change. Oddly because of video games. The games started adding in weird romance subplots and they were never very well fleshed out. They gave you a little taste of romance or companionship, but never let you see the relationship evolve over time very much. Except Dragon Age 2. Seeing the characters grow over time was great in that game.
Then came games where the main character could die in the end. Then I had to think about how the love interest would lose you and I was sunk. I had to go seek out more story elsewhere to fill this gaping need to know that the character was all right afterward. I am looking at you Mass Effect 3.
The games did such a great job at having these side characters as companions and some did have nice romance moments, but it was not enough. You wanted to know what was going to happen next. If they would really actually end up together, or if they would leave. There was so much melodrama that I was then hooked into reading romance.
I do not read straight romance even to this day. I prefer some science fiction or fantasy adventure with some romance. But considering I absolutely hated the whole idea of reading a romance or getting caught up in a romantic subplot, and now I seek them out. It is a rather funny turn of events. Another thing that video games got me into.
