Honestly, I hope we do not go to Mars. We need to learn to take care of our own planet first. I am sure we will eventually end up there because we will eventually hollow out our own planet.
It would take a long time to move much to Mars. It would be very slow going with present technologies. For a very long time, our setup on Mars would probably be very similar to research outposts in Antarctica. A hostile environment that we could not naturally live in.
It would take some science fiction levels of technology to ever have anything resembling life here on Earth. If we would even want that there. We know too little about things in space to have any real hopes of being successful off Earth.
All I can think about is “The Martian” by Andy Weir. I feel like that is what it would look like for a very long time. Scraping by and nearly dying. Theoretically possible to live there, but the actuality of it is still very far away.
