My partner and his family have a lot of friends who live in different countries. These friends have come to visit the US many times since we have been together. There are a few things that they have had difficulty with when making a plan.

I think the most amusing thing that has happened is that they struggle with how far apart things are in the US. They will talk about going to several states which are on different ends of the country. We have had to talk them out of their plans a few times when they think they can hop into a car and easily drive from one state to another in a day and then be back for other activities.

A few of them have had a lot of digestive issues and diet problems when being here. We have so much sugar and salt in our foods that a lot of foreigners struggle with what we have become accustomed to eating. Our over-processed foods are also a struggle for their appetites.

The most terrifying thing for our visitors is that they need to have health insurance while in our country. It is not something most of them have to think about in their countries or when my in-laws visit them in their home countries. One of their kids needed an emergency appendectomy while visiting and then they got a $20,000 doctor bill and they were shocked at how quickly their child was discharged. It was honestly embarrassing that we live this way. If they had that emergency at home, they would not have had a bill. Their child would have remained under care at least until they were stitched closed. Instead they were discharged and told to come back in a couple days to be stitched up.
