“Blood is thicker than water.”

This one is always interesting to me because everyone makes their case by warping what blood and water refer to.

At times, blood is familial relations and family bloodlines. Other times, it is the blood of Christ. It is also attributed to mean comrades in arms, losing blood in battle together.

Water is also sometimes thought to be referencing baptismal water. It can also be the water of the womb representing family ties.

It is a strange saying that is warped to the user’s argument regardless of the point they are making. It has been around since ancient Greek and Roman times.

Honestly, the way people use it actually proves its meaning. Blood and water do not matter. We decide what our bonds are and what the importance is to each of us. The quote itself does not matter. Using it to make an argument is silly as it can be interpreted in so many different ways.

However, people use the saying as evidence of their claim and what makes sense to them. We need to stop using it. The saying historically has no meaning because it has been so abused in order to become proof.

We all have our reasons for who in our life is more important than others. An ancient saying is not needed to support our personal histories. Who matters most to us is easily shown through our actions and words. We do not need to prove our feelings to anyone else.

“Blood is thicker than water” is not evidence for any side.
