This is definitely two questions in one. Significant life events are indeed ways to mark the passage of time, but I feel like time itself and events serve two distinct purposes.
Life events like marriage, moving, births, deaths, graduations, and more allow us to mark time as it is relative to other moments in our lives. My youngest graduates high school this year. It is incredible to think that just a few years ago, she struggled with so many things.
Events cause me to reflect on how far we have come or what we may have lost since the last time that event came around. You always think, after the holidays I will get better at writing people back and make time to get together with the people I care about. Then the holiday comes around again and you still have not found the time.
Events always seem so big and important, but they are just small blips along the road of life and yet we center our lives around them.
The passage of time can happen at any time, you get to the end of the day, week, or month and you still have not gotten around to doing something or you learn that something you thought was true is not.
Hindsight is 20/20 and as time goes by you have to evaluate your decisions. Was pushing your kid to eat their vegetables the right move when the only time you saw your kid this week was during dinner? Little small things that seem like a big deal at the time become such small wastes of time. You spend a lot more time thinking how you should have spent your time than actually doing it.
Time is something we all struggle with because our time is finite. We need to spend more time thinking how we want to spend that time and now how we should spend that time.
