It has taken until my child’s senior year to finally attend a conference and hear that none of her teachers have any real complaints. There was no concern about too much screen time, lying about screen use, doing the bare minimum, not being able to put her phone away nor any concerns about getting her work done.
I have never had such a great night. I met with eight different teachers and they all heaped praise on her work ethic, her engagement and her positive attitude. It almost felt like they were talking about someone else’s kid.
I found it to be an incredible change from the last conferences where we were encouraged to send her to summer school. And we did! She absolutely hated summer school, but she fixed a lot of her grades and got back on track for graduation.
I have been longing for this day for so long and it finally happened. It was the craziest thing. I felt like Anna from Frozen singing, “For the First Time in Forever.” It was a beautiful feeling.
Her government teacher told me that she had actually said the people she respects the most are us- her parents! She likes that we try and teach her values and always share our reasons for our beliefs. It was such a touching moment!
The moment did not last long as she is a teenager and it is the final third of the year – the holiday season. It was just such a surprise to see that she seems to have finally understood that school is much easier if you just do the work in the first place.
Thought it was a nice way to remind ourselves that while we may spend a large amount of our time being preoccupied by the bad things, we need to celebrate the good things when they happen. I wanted to share that things are not always doom and gloom. Sometimes things work out and you get to have a happy surprise!
