It is almost that time of year again. The time for a large disruption for my kids. They already hate summer break and winter break, but at least those are long enough to have a different routine long enough for us to enjoy ourselves. Spring break is long enough to cause some headaches, but too short to actually find much anything to like about it.

I know my one kid has autism and hates changes in routine, but her sister is also very against any sudden change in her ability to interact with people outside the house. They typically catch up on schoolwork and get in some extra hours of sleep. School shuts down. Their activities outside of school shut down as so many people are trying to get in a bit of vacation.

We do not bother with vacation. My kids hate crowds. My partner hates the price gouging. Sometimes the local art teacher runs a camp during the week and my kids partake in that, if only to give me a break from their unhappiness with change.

I tried getting them involved with the gardening. They loathe it for the most part. The youngest complains the entire time and the oldest can work about fifteen minutes before being done. This is not a good choice for a week-long activity.

I usually take them out to a movie at least once. We usually go early and have a popcorn breakfast which they think is so fun and special. It definitely puts them in a good mood at least for the day. We have a couple shows we watch together and we try to get caught up on those in the evenings.

Spring break is just a thing our family has to get through in order to get back to our daily lives. It is disruptive, annoying and downright traumatic for our family. I know other people count down the days until spring break. I do not want to take it away from you. I just wish we could enjoy it too.
